Not All Heroes Wear Capes

At Modern Salon & Spa, we believe in giving back to the community.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, nine of our staff members and service providers from our Waverly, Phillips Place, Metropolitan and Birkdale Village took the time out of their busy schedules to take part in The Independence Fund’s Caregivers Retreat event.

The Independence Fund serves the caregivers, who cater to our nation’s heroes and wounded veterans of all generations. Every year the organization arranges retreats to give them a break from the demanding, round-the-clock role of military caregiving through peer-to-peer support, restorative, and pampering services.

Hair styling services were provided by Nataliya Shykal from Phillips Place, Brandon Morrell from Metropolitan, Anthony Allen at Waverly and Kaitlyn Kiser at Birkdale Village. Makeup services were applied by our estheticians Alex Chadduck from Metropolitan, Tracy Allen from Waverly, Kristen Holder from Birkdale Village and Stylist Assistant, Anna Slann at Phillips Place. Lastly, our wonderful massage therapist at Metropolitan, Marissa Morrow provided incredible chair massages.

“I was just thrilled to be apart of the event, donate my services and make the caregivers feel great,” Morell, Hairstylist at Metropolitan said. They hope to lend a helping hand in the next caregivers retreat.

As a young girl in gymnastics and dance, I fell in love with getting my hair and makeup done, more than I did the activities. In middle school, I would steal my mother’s makeup and I would sneak and apply mascara and lipstick to wear to school. After graduating high school, I intended to be a hair and makeup artist and went to Paul Mitchell the School Raleigh, fully driven to work in the beauty industry.

After training, I realized I had no desire to work behind the chair, but I was still in love with the industry. I later enrolled into the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study Communications with a concentration in Public Relations to work on the business side of the industry. Now, as the Philanthropic and Events coordinator at Modern Salon & Spa I am happy to help make a difference and get people excited about beauty.
